Terry Gifford

Terry Gifford is a visiting scholar at the Research Centre for Environmental Humanities at Bath Spa University. He retired from the University of Leeds in 2004 as a Reader in Literature and Environment. He was also the Director of Research in the School of Performance and Cultural Industries. In this role, he introduced practice-based Ph.D. programmes at Leeds in theatre, dance and creative writing. And for 21 years, until 2008, he was the founding director of the annual International Festival of Mountaineering Literature. Gifford is also currently Profesor Honorifico at the Universidad de Alicante, Spain, where he co-supervises Ph.D. students in ecocriticism and conducts research with staff in English. He is also a member of the Spanish research group GIECO (Grupo de Investigación en Ecorcrítca) (literature and environment) based at the University of Alcala. Gifford is the author of nine collections of poetry, several books of ecocriticism and a collection of climbing journalism; he also edited the complete works of John Muir in two volumes and has written or edited seven books on Ted Hughes.
