Thomas J. Berghuis
Dr Thomas J. Berghuis is an art historian and curator based in Leiden, the Netherlands. Berghuis has worked as a lecturer in contemporary art and curatorial studies at Leiden University, the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and the University of Sydney, Australia. He also worked as a curator of Chinese art at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and was the founding director of Museum MACAN in Jakarta, Indonesia. His research focuses on performance art, contemporary art, exhibition histories and curatorial practices in Asia, with a special focus on China and Indonesia. Berghuis has published his research in peer-reviewed journals, edited book publications and catalogues accompanying critically acclaimed exhibitions. His monograph on Performance Art in China (Timezone 8, 2006) continues to be praised for raising awareness of the important field of performance art in China. Berghuis is currently engaged in the study of performance art in Asia.
