Timur Hammond

Timur Hammond is an assistant professor in the Department of Geography and the Environment at Syracuse University. A cultural and urban geographer, his research and teaching explore how people create meaningful worlds in relation to urban environments. His book Placing Islam: Geographies of the Sacred in 20th Century Istanbul, develops this project through a geo-history of the Istanbul neighbourhood of Eyüp. His recent articles appear in Geographical Review, ACME, Geography Compass, and Cultural Geographies and examine the geographies of commemoration, the value of a ‘regional’ frame for understanding heritage, and the notebooks of Turkish cultural historian Ahmet Süheyl Ünver.
