Tom Astley

Tom Astley is a writer and ethnomusicologist from Newcastle. His current role as Pedagogical Research Associate in the Combined Honours Centre, Newcastle University, involves developing Inquiry-Based Learning pedagogies in interdisciplinary learning and teaching. He has published work in Punk & Post-Punk, Journal of Latin American Culture, Popular Music, and Latin American Music Review investigating numerous aspects of punk aesthetics in Cuba. His recent chapter ‘The people’s mixtape’ (in Wheelan, Andrew and Raphaël Nowak (eds), Networked Music Cultures: Contemporary Approaches, Emerging Issues) takes an ethnographic approach to cultural dissemination, especially through USB devices, in contemporary Cuba. He is also makes music under the name ‘Ramos & Castillo’, and is a supporter of the perennially disappointing Newcastle United Football Club.
