Tyler Sperrazza

Tyler Sperrazza holds a dual-title Ph.D. in history and African American and Diaspora Studies from Penn State University. His research focuses on Black theatre in the post-bellum, pre-Harlem era and the intersection of theatrical movements, cultural politics, legal history and the freedom struggle. His current book project, Before There Was Plessy: Black Theatres and the Long Freedom Struggle, examines the central place of theatres in the litigation and activism of the early African American freedom struggle in the wake of the Civil War. In addition to his academic work, Tyler is a professional lighting designer and owner of his own design company with over one hundred design credits in the United States and Canada. He currently works full-time as a production manager for the Division of Student Affairs at Penn State.
