Volker Mauerhofer
He is professor and chair in environmental science (with a specialization in social science) at Mid Sweden University. He holds a master’s degrees in laws, natural sciences and ecological economics as well as a doctorate in law. Former positions include attorney-at-law, senior research fellow and visiting professor at United Nations University/Japan and coordinating lead author of the UN-IPBES Global Assessment/Chapter 6 (2016–17). Currently he holds visiting positions at Vienna University and at the Environmental Law Centre of Meiji University in Japan. He is involved in IUCN’s World Commission on Environmental Law (member), International Society for Ecological Economics (Boulding Award Committee member), the European Environmental Law Forum (Advisory Board member) and the UNESCO-related Austrian Man & Biosphere Committee (member). Besides having been editor of Ecological Economics (Elsevier, 2019–22), he is co-/author of over 110 peer-reviewed publications and held more than 200 presentations worldwide. He has executed academic and freelance research and teaching over twenty-five years in more than fifty-five countries. Professor Mauerhofer is also project coordinator and principal investigator of the international ‘ALPMEMA’ research project recently co-funded under the ‘EU-Horizon Europe/Biodiversa+/FORMAS scheme’.
