Witi Ihimaera

Witi Ihimaera, author of The Whale Rider, celebrated 50 years as a novelist in 2023. His first novel, Tangi, was released in a 50th Anniversary edition in June and his short story collection Pounamu, Pounamu is forthcoming in a new te reo edition, with each story adapted by different te reo specialists. His book White Lies will be published in Ethiopia in an Amharic Semitic edition. A play, Witi’s Wāhine, written by the late Nancy Brunning, opened to a three-week sell-out season in May 2023 at the Auckland Theatre Company. Feature films of his novels Sleeps Standing and The Uncles Story are expected to go into production in late 2024.
