Yiran Ai

Yiran Ai completed her Ph.D., ‘What makes a film feminist? Gender perspectives of directors of westernised and Hong Kong cinema between 1990 and 2000’, at the University of Birmingham (2021). Before her ground-breaking doctoral work, Ai received an MA in media and cultural studies from Lancaster University (2017) and a BA in TV and film directing from Tongji University, Shanghai (2015), for which she received a prestigious Learning Scholarship. Ai’s research interests include cinematic representations of gender identities, as well as issues surrounding postcolonialism and postmodernism. In 2019, Ai received the University of Birmingham Research Poster Conference 2019 Engagement Award.
