Yongwoo Lee
Yongwoo Lee is a senior researcher in the Institute of Asian Cultural Development in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Republic of Korea. He was a visiting assistant professor at Cornell University’s East Asia Program (2012-2013) and Mellon-Postdoctoral Teaching and Research Fellow in the Society for the Humanities at Cornell University (2010-2012). He completed his Ph.D. in Art History and Communication Studies from McGill University (2010). His primary research centers on media and cultural studies, critical theory, film theory, critical musicology of East Asia, 20th century intellectual history of Korea/Japan and colonial/postcolonial historiography in East Asia. His in-progress book manuscript, "Embedded Voices in between Empires: The Cultural Formation of Korean Popular Music in Modern Times," explores the historical trajectory of colonial mentality and the genealogy of cultural modernity and Americanization in South Korea by recontextualizing popular music as a narrative of collective memories and mass trauma.
