Yu Shenglan

Yu Shenglan is a Ph.D. candidate at the Birmingham School of Art, and she is funded by the School’s Gertrude Aston Bowater Award in partnership with Tate Liverpool. Currently, Yu is looking at the concepts and power relations of ‘looking’ and ‘being looked at’ alike through the lens of various practices by contemporary Chinese artists. Before embarking on the doctoral studies, she had worked with a range of organizations and managed the presentation of over fifty art exhibitions, programmes and events in China, United Kingdom and beyond. Her translation, Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art: The World of Art Museums in China, was co-published by Intellect (Bristol, UK) and People’s Fine Arts (Shanghai, China) in 2018. She has also interned at the learning department of Tate Liverpool and served at the Centre for Chinese Visual Arts (CCVA) as research assistant and assistant curator between 2018 and 2019.
