Cara A. Finnegan

Cara A. Finnegan is university scholar and professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of Making Photography Matter: A Viewer’s History from the Civil War to the Great Depression (Illinois 2015) and Picturing Poverty: Print Culture and FSA Photographs (Smithsonian 2003), and she is the co-editor with Lester Olson and Diane Hope of Visual Rhetoric: A Reader in Communication and American Culture (Sage 2008). Her current book project, From Daguerreotype to Digital Revolution: A History of Photography as told through Five Presidents was supported by a 2016–17 National Endowment for the Humanities faculty fellowship. For more than a decade, Finnegan has served as a consultant and collaborator with Reading the Pictures, an award-winning non-profit media literacy site dedicated to the analysis of news photos and media imagery (readingthepictures.org).
