Catherine Hoad

Dr Catherine Hoad is a lecturer in the School of Music and Creative Media Production at Massey University, Wellington, and Chair of the International Association of the Study of Popular Music Australia-Aotearoa/New Zealand branch. Catherine’s research critiques and theorizes constructions of ethnonational and gendered belongings in heavy metal scenes, with a particular focus on geolocalized discourses of metal and whiteness. Her edited collection on Australian heavy metal scenes, cultures and practices was published in 2019, and her first monograph is forthcoming through Palgrave-Macmillan.
