Emmett James O’Leary

Emmett O’Leary is an assistant professor of music education at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he teaches courses in instrumental music education. Prior to his work in Virginia he served as associate professor of music education at Crane School of Music, SUNY-Potsdam. He is a graduate of the University of Idaho (BM Music Education), Washington State University (MA Music), Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis (MS Music Technology) and Arizona State University (Ph.D. Music Education). Emmett has led college bands at the University of Notre Dame, and taught high school instrumental music in Idaho and Arizona. His research interests include competition in music education, instrumental music pedagogy, phenomenology, popular music education, technology in music instruction and creativity. His work has appeared in the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, College Music Symposium and the Journal of Band Research.
