Joshua D. Atkinson

Joshua Atkinson is a professor in the School of Media & Communicaton at Bowling Green State University in the United States. His early research focused on the role of alternative media in western activism. Specifically, his research illustrated the ways in which activists utilised alternative media to construct contexts for communicative resistance. Over the years, he interviewed numerous activists and alternative media producers affiliated with a variety of different causes: anti-war, Tea Party, indigenous rights, and more. In addition, Dr. Atkinson’s research also explored communicative practices utilised by activists in efforts to reclaim lost spaces and places. More recently, his research has turned to exploring the increasing role of alternative and activist media have in mainstream political communication in the United States. Over the years, he has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and books.
