Matthew Ricketson is an academic and journalist. He has been a professor of communication at Deakin University, Australia, since 2017. Before that, he was inaugural professor of journalism at the University of Canberra, Australia. He ran the Journalism programme at RMIT University between 1995 and 2006. He has worked on staff at The Age, The Australian, The Sunday Herald and Time Australia magazine. He was media and communications editor for The Age between 2006 and 2009. He won the George Munster National Freelance Journalism Award in 1994. He is the author of a biography of Australian author, Paul Jennings, a textbook about feature writing (now in its second edition) and a monograph, Telling True Stories. He edited a collection of profile articles and, in 2012, Australian Journalism Today. His most recent publication is a co-edited book, with Andrew Dodd, Upheaval: Disrupted Lives in Journalism (2021) published by NewSouth Books. He is a chief investigator on three Australian Research Council grants.
