Ruth Makumbirofa

Ruth Makumbirofa is an applied drama lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe where she teaches applied drama courses since 2014. She is currently a DPhil candidate and her area of research is in African performance and therapies. Ruth is a graduate of Wits University, where her Masters research focused on Performance and sustainable peace building. Her research won the Yvonne Banning Award for the best ethnography research in the Wits Schools of Arts in 2011. She attained her undergraduate degree at the University of Zimbabwe where she consequently published an article on Theatre and life skills development. Her research and teaching interests are in critical performance pedagogy, arts therapies and arts activism. For seven years, Ruth has worked extensively in community development work, using drama and theatre as a vehicle to facilitate peace and development in Zimbabwean communities. Her recent activities include devising a Safe Cities theatre project with various civic bodies and women and vendor groups in Zimbabwe.
