Txema Urkijo
Txema Urkijo is an advisor to the cabinet of Spain’s Minister of Culture and Sports. Previously, he led the efforts dedicated to historical memory within Madrid’s Office of Human Rights and Memory, as well as serving as an advisor to Madrid’ Commission on Historical Memory. He also held different positions within the area of Peace, Coexistence, Human Rights, and Victims of the Basque Government (2002–14), namely, he was the director of the Human Rights Office, advisor to the Office of Victims of Terrorism and coordinator of victim-related policy for the Secretariat of Peace and Coexistence. He practised law from 1985 to 2002 and was a founding member of the peace organization Gesto por la Paz de Euskal Herria (‘Gesture for peace in the Basque Country’) until its dissolution in 2013. He was part of its steering committee for several years.
