D. Fairchild Ruggles

D. Fairchild Ruggles holds the Debra Mitchell Chair in Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she also serves as Director of the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory. She is the art and architecture field editor for the Encyclopedia of Islam and is the author or editor of numerous award-winning books on landscape history, cultural heritage, women’s arts patronage, and Islamic art and architectural history. Her most recent book, Tree of Pearls: The Extraordinary Architectural Patronage of the 13th-Century Egyptian Slave-Queen Shajar al-Durr (Oxford University Press, 2020), won the American Society of Overseas Research’s Nancy Lapp Popular Book Award.
