The International Journal of Music in Early Childhood (IJMEC) is an interdisciplinary forum directed at the empirical study of music in early childhood, or pre-birth to age 8. The journal welcomes research-based contributions from fields, such as music education, music therapy, community music, psychology, ethnomusicology, anthropology, sociology, history, philosophy, childhood studies and social work, that are concerned with diverse aspects relating to music in the lives of young children.

The International Journal of Music in Early Childhood is published in partnership with the Early Childhood Music & Movement Association.

Aims & Scope

The International Journal of Music in Early Childhood is an interdisciplinary forum directed at the empirical study of music in early childhood, or pre-birth to age 8. The journal welcomes research-based contributions from fields, such as music education, music therapy, community music, psychology, ethnomusicology, anthropology, sociology, history, philosophy, childhood studies and social work, that are concerned with diverse aspects relating to music in the lives of young children. IJMEC publishes original research reports, best practice papers, case studies of specific programs, critical literature reviews, and book/media reviews. Areas covered will include young children's development, in and through music, pedagogical theories and tools for practitioners and researchers, early childhood music education policy, and music therapy for infants and young children. Contributors to the journal explore music in settings such as daycares, preschools and other educational spaces, as well as within families, peer groups and the community.

Peer Review Policy

All articles undergo initial editorial screening either by the journal's Editorial Team and/or incumbent Guest Editors. Articles then undergo a rigorous, anonymous, external peer review by two referees, following the guidance in Intellect's 'Peer review instructions'. Based on this feedback, the Editors will communicate a decision and revision suggestions to authors. To appeal an editorial decision, please contact the main Editor who will consider your case.

General Call for Papers

Submissions are being accepted for the International Journal of Music in Early Childhood (IJMEC), published by Intellect in partnership with the Early Childhood Music & Movement Association.

IJMEC is an interdisciplinary forum that is directed at the empirical study of music in early childhood, or pre-birth to age 8. The journal welcomes research-based contributions from fields such as music education, music therapy, community music, psychology, ethnomusicology, anthropology, sociology, history, philosophy, childhood studies, social work and others concerned with diverse aspects relating to music in the lives of young children. IJMEC publishes original research reports, critical literature reviews, book/media reviews, best practice reports (designated as 'Spotlight on Practice' articles) and interest articles (manuscripts underpinned by research that explore theories or issues) after a fully anonymous review process.

The International Journal of Music in Early Childhood aims to:

  • improve the lives of young children through music by providing a source of professional development to those committed to this cause;
  • encourage dialogue regarding the conceptualisation of childhood and music's role in the life of the young child;
  • promote inter- and transdisciplinary ideas around music in early childhood;
  • disseminate models of practice and the theories and research underpinning those practices; and
  • reveal and reflect upon views and practices in early childhood music from different regions and cultures.

Potential article topics include, but are not limited to:

  • young children's learning and development, in and through music;
  • music in daycares, preschools and other educational settings serving young children;
  • musical socialization in families, peer groups, and the community at large;
  • musical parenting, family musical experiences involving young children;
  • intersections between music learning in early childhood and the other arts;
  • pedagogical theories and tools for practitioners and researchers working musically with young children;
  • young children's everyday musical experiences in different cultures;
  • music, technology and media in young children's lives;
  • early childhood music education policy; and
  • music therapy and young children.

Article submissions should be in accordance with Intellect’s style guide and should not exceed 8,000 words. Quality colour images and scores are published when relevant; therefore, you are invited to submit potential images along with your article. IJMEC welcomes authors who do not have English as a first language and will provide editing support. Editorial Board

We are looking to welcome new members to the Editorial Board. The responsibilities comprise:

  • Providing content by occasionally writing articles, reviews, etc.;
  • Reviewing submitted manuscripts;
  • Advising on journal policy and scope;
  • Identifying topics for special issues;
  • Attracting new authors and submissions;
  • Promoting and endorsing the journal;
  • Encouraging usage of the journal;
  • Identifying conferences where the journal should be present;
  • Assisting the editor(s) in decision making over issues such as plagiarism claims and submissions where reviewers do not agree on a decision;
  • Attending the annual meeting.
