Emma Willis

Emma Willis is an associate professor of drama at the University of Auckland. Her research traverses issues of ethics, place, spectatorship, kindness, violence and dramaturgy. Publications include monographs, Metatheatrical Dramaturgies of Violence: Staging the Role of Theatre (2021), and Theatricality, Dark Tourism and Ethical Spectatorship: Absent Others (2014). From 2019–22 she led an interdisciplinary research project at the University of Auckland, Agencies of Kindness, which resulted in special journal issues in Performance Paradigm ('Performance and radical kindness') and Knowledge Cultures ('The politics and practices of kindness'). She also works as a dramaturge with a particular interest in auto/biographical performance.
