Joy Sperling is professor emerita of visual culture at Denison University. Her current book manuscript reconceptualizes modernism by examining the visual culture of women artists in New Mexico between the wars. Recent monographs include Breakfast on Pluto: Jane Gilmor (Figge Art Museum, Davenport, IA, 2022); Oro no es/Gold, Is It Not? Micaela de Vivero (Marietta College, 2022); Double Visions: Claudia Esslinger (Double Vision Press and Ohio Arts Council, 2015); Jane Gilmor: I’ll Be Back for the Cat (Iowa Arts Council, 2012) and Jude Tallichet: Fragonard’s Shoe (Sara Meltzer Gallery, New York, 2010). Sperling has published widely, has been awarded numerous research grants, and has served as president of the Popular Culture Association.
