All articles submitted should be original work and must not be under consideration by other publications.

Punk & Post-Punk is a peer-reviewed academic journal aimed at the international communities engaged with punk and post-punk subcultures. It explores the music, fashion, politics and culture of punk that were established during the mid-to-late 1970s and developed through the ensuing years and decades.

Article submissions:

As well as university-based researchers, Punk & Post-Punk invites submissions from independent scholars and anyone with a serious, critical view of the field. We welcome articles exploring punk's impact on the wider culture beyond music, including the arts, ethnography, sociology, politics, fashion, history, musicology and pedagogy. We particularly encourage articles discussing regional and international differentiation and contemporary developments in punk and post-punk subcultures. Articles should be between 6000 and 8000 words in length. Reviews can be between 1000 and 2000 words and should be of newly (or very recently) published books or punk/post-punk-related events (e.g. exhibitions, gigs and festivals). Fanzine reviews have been featured in the past and are likely to be featured in the future in a ‘round-up' format.

Topics for articles may include (but are not limited to):

  • Global impact and inclusion
  • Punk history/histories
  • Etymology and language
  • Genre definition and development
  • Antecedents and ‘proto-punk' influences
  • Practices of production
  • Art and design strategies
  • Fashion, aesthetics and style
  • Musicology
  • Politics, community, gender, class and race issues
  • Transgression and subcultural opposition
  • Associated cultural industries
  • Concepts of independence and ‘DIY' cultures
  • Authenticity
  • Archival Approaches

Potential contributors should send a 200-word abstract to Editor Dr Russ Bestley at r.bestley@lcc.arts.ac.uk

Journal contributors will receive a free PDF copy of their final work upon publication. Print copies of the journal may also be purchased by contributors at half price.
